2012 Dakota Commemorative March
There is a sad anniversary coming, from a tragic history we all share but may not know. 150 years ago this November, in the aftermath of the Dakota-U.S. War of 1862, 1,700 captive Dakota women, children, and elders were force-marched 150 miles from their homes in southern Minnesota to Fort Snelling. An unknown number died during the march at the hands of soldiers and angry mobs. An estimated 300 more died that winter under brutal conditions at the Fort Snelling concentration camp.
The faith community is encouraged to help support the Dakota people who are leading and participating in the November 7-13 Dakota Commemorative March and the Dakota 38 horse ride this December along with other commemorative or educational events.
